LumberKings Comeback Bid Comes Up Short, Lose in Extras to Hoots
Clinton, IA - The Clinton LumberKings (12-8) scored four runs in the bottom of the ninth to force extra innings against the O'Fallon Hoots (10-11). The Hoots scored a run in the top of the tenth to defeat the LumberKings 9-8.
The LumberKings had their six game winning streak and seven-game home winning streak snapped.
It was the first extra-inning game of the year for Clinton.
Clinton scored five unanswered runs between the bottom of the eighth and ninth. Between the two innings, the team worked eight walks.
Gavin Awbrey (SCC), Kale Jensen (UIC) and Cole Lanclos (Baylor) led the offense. Awbrey hit his fourth homer of the year in a two for four effort.
Kale Jensen (UIC) went two for two with four walks. Four walks matches the LumberKings Prospect League single-game record.
Lanclos drove in two RBI while having two hits.
O'Fallon scored the first run of the game in the first. The LumberKings answered with Awbrey's homerun in the second. Both teams traded a pair in the third,
Will Specht (Iowa Central) walked and Awbrey singled to begin the third. Lanclos batted them home.
The Hoots took a three run lead in the top of the fourth, before the teams exchanged zero's.
Kasey Clark (Black Hawk) and Conner Diiulio (SCC) both threw a scoreless inning in middle relief.
O'Fallon scored three in the top of the eighth to take a 8-3 lead.
The LumberKings began chipping away in the eighth. Jensen and Brody Shinkle (Creighton) and Jaylen Ziegler (Iowa) walked to load the bases with no outs.
After a double play on a fly out into a throwing out at home. Despite having two outs, Isaac Sobieszczyk (Missouri Western) and Awbrey worked walks to make it 8-4.
The ninth inning began on three straight bases on balls. Ziegler and Specht both drove RBI singles to make it a two run game.
Sobieszczyk legged out a potential double-play to score another on a groundball. It pulled the team within one for his 18th RBI of the year.
A wild pitch allowed Ziegler to score to tie the game.
O'Fallon scored one in the top of the tenth on a sacrifice fly, which turned into the winning run. Clinton came up short in the bottom of the inning.
The two meet again tomorrow at 6:30 p.m. as the LumberKings continue their six-game homestand.
