Elotes explode for 17 runs, blank Pistol Shrimp for the second time in dominant home win
CLINTON, Iowa - The Clinton Elotes (3-3) erupted for 17 runs on 16 hits and backed it with seven shutout innings from starter Chance Key in a lopsided 17-0 victory over the Illinois Valley Pistol Shrimp on Sunday afternoon to a crowd of 3,124 fans at NelsonCorp Field.
With the win, Clinton returns to the win column and have scored 24-0 against Illinois Valley. The Pistol Shrimp (3-3) remain scoreless through 16 innings played against Clinton, dating back to opening night on May 27.
After a scoreless first two innings, the Elotes offense caught fire in the 3rd. Kaden Frommelt opened the scoring with a bases-clearing double to center field, driving in three runs. Brayden Mulkey followed with an RBI single to make it 4-0.
In the fourth, Clinton sent 11 batters to the plate and piled on seven more runs. Sam Wiese laced a two-RBI single to center, Frommelt added his fourth RBI with another single, and Mulkey doubled in two more to cap a four-RBI day. Danny Gavin tacked on two more with a double to center as Clinton built an 11-0 lead after four.
Clinton finished its scoring with a six-run sixth. A fielding error allowed Frommelt to score before RBI hits by Colin Coonradt, Joey Hagen, Austin Mallee, and Wiese pushed the lead to 17-0. Mallee finished with two hits and two RBIs, while Wiese had three hits and three RBIs.
Frommelt paced the Elotes with a 3-for-5 day, scoring three times and collecting four RBIs. Mulkey also had three RBIs on two hits and a stolen base. Gavin finished 3-for-4 with two RBIs, and six different Clinton batters recorded at least one RBI.
On the mound, Key (1-0) was dominant in his first win of the season, tossing six shutout innings with two hits, one walk, and two strikeouts. Jacob Young closed the door in the 7th with a clean inning, adding one strikeout.
Illinois Valley was limited to just two hits on the day—singles by Tyler Dorsch and James Love. The Shrimp stranded three runners and committed two errors in the field. Starter Simon Skroch (0-1) took the loss after allowing four runs on five hits over three innings.
Clinton is off tomorrow, and will begin a six day road trip on Tuesday before returning home on June 10. The road trip will feature stops with Illinois Valley, Springfield and Burlington. The LumberKings will face off with Illinois Valley on Tuesday with first pitch scheduled at 7:05 at Schweickert Stadium at Veteran's Memorial Park.
