LumberKings silence CornBelters behind Bruno’s gem
CLINTON, Iowa — Jackson Bruno fired six scoreless innings and the Clinton Shadflies (23-10, 5-3) used a steady stream of offense from the 4th through 6th innings to beat the Normal CornBelters (14-19, 2-5) 5-1 on Saturday night at NelsonCorp Field.
Bruno (2-0) scattered seven hits and struck out five without a walk in his strongest outing of the summer. He was backed by timely run support, as Clinton broke a scoreless tie in the 4th and never looked back.
In the bottom of the 4th, Drew Terpins led off with a walk and later came around to score on a two-out RBI single up the middle by Colin Coonradt, giving Clinton a 1-0 lead.
The next inning, the Shadflies took full control. Jaylen Ziegler reached on an infield single and Brayden Mulkey walked to set the table. Jamie Rasmussen capitalized with a two-run single to left, extending the lead to 3-0.
Clinton added two more in the 6th after Brytton Clements singled and Coonradt followed with a base hit. Jack Funke came through with a two-RBI single to right, pushing the lead to 5-0.
Normal finally broke through in the 9th after back-to-back singles and a fielder's choice grounder from Jack Novak plated Tony Konopiots. The lone run was unearned due to a throwing error on a potential game ending double-play turn.
Jay Kennedy pitched two scoreless innings in relief with five strikeouts, and Elijah Green closed the door with a three-out 9th. Clinton's pitching staff combined for 11 strikeouts on the night while allowing just one walk.
Funke led the offense with a 3-for-4 night, including a double and two RBI. Coonradt and Clements added two hits apiece. Rasmussen drove in two runs, and Terpins and Ziegler each stole a base and scored a run.
Normal's Cody DelFavero (0-1) took the loss despite a solid four-inning start, allowing one run on four hits.
