Mulkey’s walk-off double lifts Clinton past Springfield in slugfest
CLINTON, Iowa — Brayden Mulkey delivered a pinch-hit, two-run double in the bottom of the ninth to lift the Clinton Elotes (28-11, 10-4) to a 14-13 walk-off win over the Springfield Lucky Horseshoes (10-29, 2-11) on Sunday evening at NelsonCorp Field.
Clinton opened the scoring with a six-run second inning. Kaden Frommelt and Max Burt each scored on passed balls before Brytton Clements drove in a run with a single. Nick Venteicher followed with an RBI double, Brett White added a sacrifice fly, and Jamie Rasmussen capped the frame with an RBI single to make it 6-0.
Springfield responded in the fourth with a two-run double by Brady Vessells, cutting the deficit to 6-2. In the bottom half, Venteicher singled home Danny Gavin to push Clinton's lead to 7-2.
The Lucky Horseshoes added two more in the fifth. Chase Wiese walked with the bases loaded, and Vessells followed with another bases-loaded walk to make it 7-4. Clinton answered with four runs in the bottom of the inning. Burt doubled home a run, Gavin grounded out to bring in another, Venteicher delivered his third RBI of the night with a single, and White added a run-scoring single to extend the lead to 11-4.
Springfield mounted a comeback in the seventh. Michael Clarkson singled in a run, Wiese followed with an RBI single, and Vessells reached on a throwing error that scored another. Charlie Linderman brought home a fourth run with a sacrifice fly, trimming the margin to 11-8.
The Lucky Horseshoes surged ahead in the eighth with five runs. Clarkson singled home two, and Jackson Snitko cleared the bases with a three-run double to give Springfield a 13-11 lead, their first and only lead of the game.
Clinton got one back in the bottom half when Frommelt drove in Rasmussen with an RBI single. In the ninth, Venteicher singled and Gavin walked to start the inning. Mulkey, pinch-hitting, launched a double to left field to plate both runners and give Clinton the walk-off win.
Venteicher went 4-for-6 with three RBIs and three runs scored to lead the Elotes. Frommelt added two hits, two stolen bases, and an RBI. Clarkson finished 3-for-4 with three RBIs and three runs scored for Springfield.
Luke Kehrli (3-0) earned the win with a scoreless ninth inning for Clinton. Will Schufreider started and allowed two runs on three hits over four innings. Kolton Lyman walked five and gave up two runs without recording an out. Jack Kruger gave up four runs (three earned) over 2 1/3 innings, and Camden Clewett allowed five earned runs on three hits and two walks in the eighth.
Collin Netto (1-3) took the loss after allowing two runs on two hits in the ninth. Springfield starter Jake Nelms was charged with six runs (four earned) in two innings. Isaiah Terrell gave up five runs over 2 1/3 innings, and Baron Odam allowed just one run in three innings of relief before giving way to the bullpen.
The LumberKings will have Monday off before traveling for a two-game series against the Illinois Valley Pistol Shrimp. This will be their first match-up since June 8th. First pitch is set for 7:05 p.m.
