LumberKings Storm Comeback to Defeat Pistol Shrimp, Coach Trevor Burkhart Earns First Win
Peru, IL - The Clinton LumberKings (1-3) took a one-run lead behind three seventh inning runs to stun the Illinois Valley Pistol Shrimp (2-2) 6-5. Coach Trevor Burkhart notched his first career win.
Every starter for the LumberKings reached to earn the victory.
Entering the seventh trailing 5-3, Clinton took advantage of three free passes to take the lead. Gavin Awbrey (SCC) and Karson Grout (State College of Florida) were both hit by pitches. Carter Schueler (walked to load the bases)
Chase McEwan (Black Hawk) drove the ball through the right side of the infield that got past the second baseman, scoring two and tying the game. It was scored as an error, with McEwan picking up his first two RBI of the season.
Brody Shinkle (Creighton) landed a single to right field, plating Schueler to give Clinton the lead.
Andrew Theiss (DMACC) tossed a scoreless eighth and ninth inning to earn his first save of the season. He had three strikeouts.
Will Schufreider (Mount Mercy) earned the win with 2.2 shutout innings out of relief. The righty got out of bases loaded with nobody out in the seventh.
Clinton got on the board in the top of the first. Jaylen Ziegler (Iowa) opened the game with a walk, before stealing second and moving to third on an error. Ziegler is tied for second in the league in stolen bases with six.
Esteban Marin (Benedictine University) drove a broken-bat single to right to make it 1-0.
Sutton Lewis (ULM) scored in the second inning on an error by the pitcher. He got on via a hit by pitch and moved to second on Chase McEwan (Black Hawk) single.
An Illinois Valley two-run homerun tied the game in the bottom of the second.
Gavin Awbrey (SCC) doubled to score a run in the fifth inning to make it 3-2. The Pistol Shrimp punched back in the bottom of the inning to make it 5-3.
Chris Danko hit two home runs for the Pistol Shrimp.
Illinois Valley finished with five errors.
The Pistol Shrimp travels to the Springfield Lucky Horseshoes (0-4) tomorrow at 6:30 p.m.
