First Inning Barrage Leads Clinton to Fifth Straight Home Win

Clinton, IA - The Clinton LumberKings (6-5) scored six times in the first inning to defeat the Quincy Doggy Paddlers (5-6) 10-3 at NelsonCorp Field June 5.

The LumberKings have won five straight at home and are above .500 for the first time this season. They are officially tied for first in the Northwest Division.

After a scoreless top of the first inning, the LumberKings bats got to work. Jaylen Ziegler (Iowa) and Will Specht (Iowa Central) got on in two pitches, via a hit by pitch and single. Just a pitch later, the players both took off, completing a double steal to make it 1-0.

Parker Studtman (Iowa Central) was hit by a pitch, putting two on with nobody out.

Gavin Awbrey (SCC) blasted his second home run in as many days to make it 4-0. The ball traveled 387ft and brought him to 13 RBI on the year.

Brody Shinkle (Creighton) was hit two pitches later and Noah Thein (Washington State) reached on a bunt single in his first at-bat of the season.

The team small-balled their way to two more runs; after both players stole, an errant throw allowed Shinkle to score. Ben Toft (Iowa) drove a sacrifice fly to make it 6-0.

Quincy responded with a two-run homerun by Brady Kindhart in the top of the second. Jaylen Ziegler (Iowa) made a ridiculous sliding catch to help starter Jayson Sevier (Black Hawk) get out of the frame.

Sevier surrendered 9 hits, but only gave up two runs over four innings. His defense converted double plays in the third and fourth.

Will Schufreider (Mount Mercy) got the win with three innings out of relief. He allowed just one run and hit on a solo homer. He has thrown 7.2 innings this season, allowing one run.

Ziegler scored a run in the fourth after a lead-off walk. He stole second and third and came home on a wild pitch.

Clinton finished with seven stolen bases, including three by Ziegler. He has 13 on the year.

The LumberKings broke through for three more in the sixth. After a pair of walks, Awbrey brought home another on a fielder's choice. He finished with four RBI in the game.

Shinkle followed with a ball in the gap, getting to third before a throwing error allowed him to score. The little league homerun. Shinkle's second triple of the season.

Connor Diiulio (SCC) and Andrew Theiss (DMACC) each tossed a shutout inning out of relief.

Bobby Eidell received the loss.

Clinton finished with zero errors.
