LumberKings Dig Deep to Defeat Hoots

O'Fallon, MO - The Clinton LumberKings (9-7) scored six runs in the second inning and fended off the O'Fallon Hoots (7-10) to win 11-8. 

 

The LumberKings have won three straight and move to second in the Northwest Division. 

 

The team rallied with three runs in the seventh to take over a one-run game. 

 

Ben Toft (Iowa) and Brody Shinkle (Creighton) guided the offense. Toft had three RBI and two hits. Shinkle two walks, runs and hits with an RBI. 

 

Every starter reached and eight of the nine had hits.

 

O'Fallon jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the first on a Samuel Paule homerun and Nick Bonczowski sacrifice fly.

 

Clinton came back with the six-run rally. The team worked five walks in the inning and finished with nine on the game. 

 

Shinkle and Drake Obermueller (DMACC) had RBI walks as part of the scoring-effort. Ben Toft, Parker Studtmann (Iowa Central) and Isaac Sobieszczyk (Missouri Western State) each had RBI knocks. Studttmann drove in two and has six RBI in five games this summer. 

 

The Hoots scored in the bottom of the second. After a leadoff single, Obermueller scored on a wild pitch in the fourth, making it 7-3

 

O'Fallon tallied three runs on four hits in the fourth to make it a one-run game. 

 

Grant Ingram (Bellarmine) blasted his first homerun of the season to regain a two-run lead in the fifth. Samuel Paule posted an RBI single to bring it back to a one-run game. 

 

The LumberKings did their damage in the seventh with two outs. After two walks, Shinkle picked up a single to bring the top of the order up. 

 

Toft laid down a bunt on the left side that he raced out. Two runs scored on the play. 

 

Toft initiated a double steal that plated Shinkle one pitch later. The lead was four after the seventh.

 

Clinton's bullpen locked it down for five innings of two-run ball to finish the game.

 

Miller Tavaglione (Allen County CC) received the win with three innings of one run ball. He's allowed one earned run in his last four outings.

 

Gavin McCullough (McLellan CC) and Andrew Theiss (DMACC) threw the eighth and ninth respectively. Theiss got his second save of the season with a clean ninth.

 

The LumberKings close out their six game road with another game vs the Hoots. First pitch is set for 6:35 p.m. June 14.
