LumberKings Storm Seventh Inning Comeback to Beat Lucky Horseshoes

Clinton, IA - The Clinton LumberKings (11-7) scored nine unanswered runs between the seventh and eighth inning to stun the Springfield Lucky Horseshoes (8-10) 18-10 June 16 at NelsonCorp Field. 

 

The LumberKings are now tied for the Northwest Division lead. It's the team's fifth straight win and sixth consecutive at home. 

 

Ben Toft had six RBI in a three-hit explosion. He had the go-ahead RBI, driving in two with a single in the seventh to make it 12-10. 

 

Every LumberKing hitter reached base as the team scored double-digits in their five straight games.

 

Miller Tavaglione (Allen County CC) got the win as the backend of the bullpen slammed the door shut. He threw 1.1 scoreless with one earned. 

 

Andrew Theiss (DMACC) threw the final two innings, striking out four while giving up one hit. 

 

The 'Shoes scored the first two runs of the game. Clinton responded with four runs in the first on three walks, two hit by pitches. Springfield committed two errors. 

 

The LumberKings scored in four of the five first innings. 

 

Jaylen Ziegler (Iowa) started the second off with a hit. He stole second right away. Ziegler finished with four stolen bases to move to second in the league in swiped bags. The team stole eight bases.

 

Toft brought him home with an RBI double. He has 10 RBI in his last three games. 

 

Clinton scored a pair on the third when the first three batters reached. Toft scored one on a fielder's choice and Gavin Awbrey (SCC) had an RBI single with two-outs. He is second in the league with 24 RBI. 

 

Springfield scored three times in the fourth inning on a Griffin Novacek three run homerun. He leads the league in long bombs. 

 

Toft had a two RBI double in the fifth inning to make it 9-6. 

 

The Lucky Horseshoes hit two homerusns as part of a four run, four hit rally in the sixth. They took a 10-9 lead. 

 

Clinton started the rally early in the seventh. Will Specht (Iowa Central) and Jackson Mishler (Black Hawk) ripped singles to kick off the inning.


Zielger laid down a bunt and was able to beat it out. An errant throw moved hit to second and scored Specht to tie it.


Toft drove in two on a 3-2 single to make it 12-10.  He is tied third on the team with 13 RBI.

 

The LumberKings never looked back. Noah Thein (Washington State) came in as a defensive replacement and scored another on an RBI single. Specht, up for the second time in the inning, walked in another run. 

 

Clinton banked in two more in the eighth. Thein had a second RBI single, Isaac Sobieszczyk  (Missouri Western State) smashed a two RBI triple and Cole Lanclos (Baylor) ground out to score one more. 

 

The win made it the LumberKings longest win streak since July 4 to 11 of last season. 

 

The game had an attendance of 5322, the most attended game of the year. The game lasted 3:45, the longest home game since the team joined the Prospect League. 

 

Springfield will play a double header against Dubois County (12-7) at home July 18, starting at 6:00 p.m.
