LumberKings Allow Big Inning Early in Loss to Cornbelters

Clinton, IA - The Normal CornBelters (16-14, 1-3) scored four in the first-inning and hung on to defeat the Clinton LumberKings (16-11, 2-1) 8-5 at NelsonCorp Field June 30. 

 

Clinton scored four between the first and second inning to tie the game up. Normal plated one in the third and two in the fifth to take a two-run lead. 

 

Jaylen Ziegler (Iowa) and Gavin Awbrey (SCC) strung back to back singles in the first. Isaac Sobieszczyk (Missouri Western State University) drove a double over the centerfielder's head to plate them both. He has four RBI in two games.

 

With two outs, Cole Lanclos (Baylor) drove in another on an RBI single. 

 

In the second, the LumberKings manufactured two hits. JT Augustyniak (Kaskaskia) and Ziegler both picked up singles to put two on. 

 

Noah Thein (Washington State) utilized a bunt to tie the game at 4-4. 

 

The LumberKings wouldn't score until the sixth to cut the deficit to two. 

 

Jayden Bazile (Kaskaskia) reached third on an outfield error, with Brody Shinkle (Creighton) bringing him home on a two-out, two-strike RBI single. Shinkle has driven in 17 runs this season.

 

Normal gave up just one run in the final seven innings. Luka Zakman got the win and Nick Krueger got the save. Jaqson Tejada (NIU) registered the loss.


Jackson Wohlers (Saint Leo) shined with three innings of one run ball out of the bullpen. He struck out three in his longest appearance of the season.

 

Andrew Theiss (DMACC) threw a scoreless ninth inning. 

 

Normal returns home to take on Lafayette Aviators (17-12, 0-3)
