Luxem Throws Gem, Terpins Brings Five Home in Independence Day Win
Clinton, IA - It was fireworks top to bottom, as the Clinton LumberKings (19-12, 5-2) defeated the Burlington Bees (15-18, 4-4) 11-4 July 4 at NelsonCorp Field.
Keegan Luxem (UIC) tossed six scoreless innings to get the win. He has thrown 13 shutout innings in his last two home starts. He finished with seven strikeouts and four hits allowed.
Drew Terpins (Mount Mercy) exploded for five RBI in his first home game with the team. The All-Star from last season had two extra-base hits.
The LumberKings had every starter reach while working 12 walks and being hit six times.
Clinton jumped out to a two run lead in the first inning. Jalen Ziegler (Iowa) and Cole Lanclos (Baylor) both worked walks to begin the game.
Gavin Awbrey (SCC) smashed a double to left field to score one and get the team on the board. It was his fifth double of the season.
After Isaac Sobieszczyk (Missouri Western State) walked to load the bases, Caden Sammler (FIU) was hit by a pitch to make it 2-0.
The game settled in for a pitcher's duel, until Burlington made a pitching change in the fifth. Clinton responded with three-runs with two outs.
Sobieszczyk and Jayden Bazile (Kaskaskia) both singled to put two on. Thein was hit by a pitch to load the bases.
Terpins hammered a double to clear the bases and make it 5-0. He was thrown out at third to end the frame.
Luxem threw a 1-2-3 sixth inning to set up the offense for four more runs on zero hits.
Ben Toft (Iowa) and Ziegler both walked to start the game. Lanclos was hit to load the bases.
Awbrey picked up an RBI hit by pitch to score another. It was his 35th RBI of the year, which is third in the league. It was also his 15th hit by pitch, good for the lead league.
Two wild pitches scored two and Bazile registered an RBI on a groundout.
Burlington hit a three run homerun in the seventh inning to bring it to 9-3.
In the eighth, Sammler had a single and Thein was hit.
Terpins continued his monster day with a two RBI double in the eight to bring the run total to 11.
The Bees plated one in the ninth, with the LumberKings hanging in for their second straight win.
Clinton sits atop the Northwest Division early in the second-half.
Both teams will face off for a doubleheader starting at 2:00 p.m at NelsonCorp Field.
