Elotes Sweep Double Header Against Bees, Utilizing Walk Off in Game One and Shutout in Game Two
Clinton, IA - The Clinton Elotes (7-2, 21-12) completed a twin-bill sweep of the Burlington Bees (4-6,15-20), winning 6-5 and 4-0 July 5 at NelsonCorp Field.
Clinton has won four straight games and ends Week Five atop the Northwest Division. The team finishes a five-game set against the Bees 4-1.
Both games were seven inning contests due to the double header.
GAME 1:
Clinton trailed 5-1 going into the bottom of the sixth, before storming a comeback to walk it off in the seventh. The team scored three runs with two-outs in the seventh to earn the victory.
Caden Sammler (FIU) worked the walk-off walk with the bases loaded off of Burlington closer Jake Weissenberger to end the game.
Burlington jumped out to a 4-0 lead in the third inning on two home runs. The Elotes punched back with a run when Jayden Bazile (Kaskaskia) brought home JT Augustyniak (Kaskaskia) on a sacrifice fly.
The Bees built on the lead with a solo shot in the top of the sixth.
The Elotes began chipping away with two outs in the sixth. Isaac Sobieszczyk (Missouri Western State) walked and Kale Jensen (UIC) doubled to put them on.
Burlington starter Braden Vanderheydt had thrown 5.2 innings of one run ball, until he faced James Burgess (Sauk Valley) with two-on and two outs.
Burgess came up with his first LumberKing hit, as he drove a ball into the gap for a two RBI double.
Chance Key (Ohio State) tossed a scoreless seventh inning to keep the score 5-3.
In the seventh, Ben Toft (Iowa) singled to right field with one out.
With two outs, Kaden Frommelt (Florida State) was hit by a pitch in a 3-2 count. Cole Lanclos (Baylor) took over as a pinch-runner.
Gavin Awbrey (SCC) worked another 3-2 walk to load the bases.
Sobiesczczyk crafted a six-pitch at bat for the RBI walk. A wild pitch scored Awbrey and tied the game.
Jensen also walked to reload the bases, to set up Sammler for the win. The inning finished with three Clinton runs all with two outs.
Key got the victory and Weissenberger received the loss.
GAME 2
Clinton plated four in the first two innings of the game, with the pitching staff holding the Bees to zero runs.
Jai Jensen (USI) got the start and went three scoreless.. He stranded six bases.
Connor Diiulio (SCC) got the win with two scoreless frames. He picked up one strikeout.
Miller Tavaglione (Allen County CC) threw the last two innings.
Ziegler singled on the first Burlington pitch of the game. After two stolen-bases, Lanclos brought him home on an RBI groundout.
Ziegler is the new single-season stolen bases leader in LumberKings Prospect History. The previous record was 33, held by Trevor Burkhart. He now leads the league with 35 bases.
In the second, Kaden Frommelt (Florida State) smashed a double.
JT Augustyniak (Kaskaskia) walked to put two on.
With two outs, Ziegler scored one on an RBI single. An error allowed another to score.
Ben Toft (Iowa) tacked on another run with an RBI single.
The All-Star break begins July 5. Awbrey and Keegan Luxem (UIC) will participate for the LumberKings.
