Burgess Hits Go-Ahead Home Run in Sixth Inning to Defeat Chillicothe

Chillicothe, OH - James Burgess (Sauk Valley) hit a go-ahead three run home run with two-outs in the sixth inning to give the Clinton LumberKings (12-4, 26-14) the lead over the Chillicothe Paints (10-7, 22-22). 

 

Clinton would go on to use some insurance runs and timely pitching to win the game 8-3. 

 

 

The LumberKings enter the final two weeks of the season atop the Northwest Division. 

 

The game began a pitcher's duel, with Luke Kehrli (Mount Mercy) and Parker Heaney both throwing four scoreless innings. 

 

The LumberKings broke through in the fifth on a two-out RBI single from Brody Shinkle (Johnson County CC) to make it 1-0.

 

Chillicothe hit two homers in the bottom of the inning to make the game 3-1.


Kehrli's final line was 4.1 innings, surrendering three earned runs while striking out three. 

 

Clinton had a big response in the sixth. With two outs, Kale Jensen (Missouri Western State) and JT Augustyniak (Kaskaskia) both worked walks.


Burgess came through with his first homer of the season to make the game 4-3. He has six RBI in four games. It came off of Heaney, who had allowed one run over his first 5.2 innings.

 

Kasey Clark (Black Hawk) took over in the fifth and got the final two outs. He tossed a 1-2-3 sixth. 

 

In the seventh, Clark walked two batters and got one out. 


Nick Baffa (Valparaiso) came in his first outing out of relief. He gave up a single to load the bases. 

 

He followed up with back to back strikeouts to strand the bases loaded. 

 

Clinton took over in the eighth inning to take a commanding lead. With two outs, Wrigley Matthys (Iowa) and Cole Lanclos (Baylor) both walked. Clinton finished with seven walks. 

 

Shinkle delivered another clutch hit, striking his second double of the game. He has 26 RBI on the season. It made the game 5-3. 

 

Kaden Frommelt (Florida State) followed with a three run missile for his third homer of the season. He has two long-bombs in the last three games.

Chance Key (Ohio State) tossed two scoreless innings to finish out the game.


Clark got the win to move to 5-0 on the season. Heaney received the loss. 

 

Clinton closes out its five-day eastern road trip with a 2-1 record. 

 

Chillicothe will stay at home, taking on the Johnstown Mill Rats (21-18, 7-7) July 21.
