Gavin Awbrey and Bryce Pauly Lead Double Header Sweep Over Illinois Valley
Clinton, IA - The Clinton LumberKings (28-15, 14-5) won both legs of a double header over the Illinois Valley Pistol Shrimp (13-34, 5-17) behind monster offensive efforts from Gavin Awbrey (SCC) and Bryce Pauly (Indiana).
The final scores were 11-5 and 7-2. The wins keep Clinton atop the Northwest Division.
Awbrey hit homers in both games and had four RBI in two games. Pauly made his debut, hitting one homer and having five RBI over both games.
Game 1:
Kasey Clark (Black Hawk) made his first start of the season and threw 4.1 innings to earn the win. He picked up his sixth win of the season, which is the most in a single-season in LumberKings Prospect League History. He topped Nolan Frey's record from 2022.
The Pistol Shrimp jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the first inning.
Clinton bounced back with a two-out, two-run homer from Awbrey. It was his sixth homer of the season in his second game back from the All-Star Break.
After a shutout inning from Clark, Clinton poured on six runs in the second.
Pauly smashed a two-run homer over 400ft in his first LumberKing at-bat to give the team its first lead.
After three straight free passes and a pitching change, Cole Lanclos (Baylor) cleared the bases on a three RBI double. It brought him up to 25 RBI on the season.
Awbrey followed up with a single, and a wild pitch scored Lanclos to complete the six run inning.
The LumberKings added on to their 8-2 lead with three in the fourth. Jensen and Awbrey led off the frames with singles.
JT Augustyniak (Kaskaskia) scored one on an RBI single. He has an RBI in three straight games.
Pauly brought home two more on another single. He finished with three hits and four RBI in his Clinton debut.
The Pistol Shrimp scored three in the fifth to get within six runs.
Lucas Winburn (Delta State) and Miller Tavaglione (Columbus State) each threw scoreless innings to end the game.
Game 2:
The Pistol Shrimp scored two in the top of the first, with Clinton answering with two in the second, three in the third, and one in the fourth and fifth.
Jaqson Tejada (NIU) threw four innings of one-hit ball, he finished with three straight scoreless to end his outing. He earned his victory of the season.
Pauly had an RBI single in the second to get the team on the board. Augustyniak grounded into an infield single, with an error scoring the tying run in the second.
Awbrey blasted his second homer in as many games in the third inning to give Clinton the lead. He has 7 long-bombs o n the season, which matches Luke Ira's record from 2022.
Augustyniak also had an RBI single in the inning. Clinton brought all nine batters up in the third.
Caden Samler (Missouri State) doubled with two outs in the fourth, He scored on a fielding error.
The LumberKings scored their final run when Awbrey doubled in the sixth. He came around on a wild pitch to make it 7-2.
Jai Jensen (Minnesota State Mankato), Tanner Short (Houston Christian) and Andrew Theiss (SDSU) each threw shutout innings out of the bullpen to secure the victory.
Awbrey had two extra-base hits and Isaac Sobieszczyk (Missouri Western) had his first three hit game of the season.
Clinton moves to 4-0 in double headers this season.
The Pistol Shrimp return home to take on the Normal Cornbelters (27-18, 12-8)
The LumberKings continue its homestand with a big game against the Burlington Bees (27-21,16-7). The game features the two top teams in the division in the second half. First pitch is at 6:30 p.m.
