CLINTON, Iowa — The Clinton LumberKings (15-6) extended their winning streak with a doubleheader sweep over the Burlington Bees (10-12) on Saturday at NelsonCorp Field, using a late comeback to take the opener 4-3 before erupting for an 11-1 rout in the nightcap.
In Game 1, Clinton trailed 3-1 entering the bottom of the sixth before piecing together a three-run rally. Jaylen Ziegler sparked the comeback with an RBI single to bring the LumberKings within one. A bases-loaded walk to Brayden Mulkey tied the game, and Nick Venteicher's grounder to third was mishandled, allowing Ziegler to score the go-ahead run. Clinton's bullpen held firm from there, with Jackson Bruno (1-0) earning the win after a scoreless sixth and Camden Clewett closing it out in the seventh for his third save.
The Bees held leads in the third, fourth, and fifth innings behind RBI hits from Kooper Schulte, Colin Schmitke, and Keanu Spenser. Starter Reese Ellison (5.2 IP, 6 H, 4 R, 3 ER) was charged with the loss after Dominic Teixeira allowed the final inherited run to score. Burlington outhit Clinton 8-6 but committed two costly errors and grounded into three double plays. JC Dermody and Tyler Welch combined for five innings on the mound for the LumberKings before handing it over to the bullpen.
Game 2 was decided early, as Clinton sent 14 batters to the plate in a 10-run first inning. Sam Wiese opened the scoring with an RBI double and later scored twice in the inning. Brett White drove in two with a single, and Max Burt, Danny Gavin, and James Hackett all chipped in RBIs. Clinton capitalized on three walks, two hit batters, and two wild pitches during the frame, chasing Burlington starter Danny Harris (0-1) after just one out.
Chance Key (3-0) cruised through three innings, allowing one run on three hits with three strikeouts. Luke Kehrli followed with two hitless innings to finish the five-inning game. Burlington's only run came on a Dylan Shepherd RBI double in the second. The Bees managed just three hits and couldn't recover from the early deficit.
With the sweep, Clinton's magic number falls to 2. The LumberKings return to action on Sunday as the Elotes and will welcome the Normal CornBelters on Sunday. First pitch is set for 2 p.m.
